Georg Utz GmbH, a leading international manufacturer of storage and transport containers and technical plastic parts, has always attached great importance to environmental responsibility and the conservation of resources. At the Schüttorf site, the company operates a closed cooling water circuit that not only supplies the injection molding machines, but is also used to heat the administration and production buildings.
A technical solution was sought to immediately separate unforeseen inputs of hydraulic oil into the circulating cooling water system and thus be able to operate the cooling process smoothly in the long term.
LK Metallwaren developed and supplied an ultrafiltration system that was installed in the bypass flow of the central cooling water tank. This system works continuously in a bypass process and removes the finest impurities, microorganisms as well as oil and grease particles from the cooling water.
The principle of ultrafiltration uses semi-permeable membranes that reliably retain particles and molecules above a defined size. This keeps the cooling medium permanently clear and free of deposits. The compact system could be easily integrated into the existing piping system – without affecting ongoing operations.
An LK light liquid separator is used for pre-treatment to support the filtration process. Pre-separation of light liquids and particle residues significantly increases the service life of the filtration membranes and improves process reliability.
Continuous off-line filtration keeps the entire cooling water system of the plastic injection molding machines clean and reliable. Sludge and biofilm formation are effectively prevented, sensitive EPDM seals remain protected and maintenance work on the cooling system is significantly reduced. The service life of the systems is also extended.
